Backseat Drivers puts two players in a broken-down car on an endless journey where neither has full control. One player takes the role of the driver, who cannot see where the car is going, while the other plays the passenger, who can see the road but cannot steer. The only hope of reaching the destination lies in constant shouting of directions from the back seat and the driver’s ability to follow them. Meanwhile, the car creaks, shakes, and falls apart piece by piece, and the environment outside seems determined to throw as many problems at you as possible — from sudden roadblocks to collapsing paths. The result is a trip where communication is the only thing standing between you and complete disaster.

The Driver’s Challenge

Driving in Backseat Drivers means wrestling with a machine that seems to have a mind of its own. Every attempt to turn, accelerate, or slow down feels unpredictable, as if the car is actively trying to sabotage you. Your passenger’s words are your only guide, but hearing them is not enough — you must react quickly and trust their calls completely. If your partner shouts “left,” you need to turn without hesitation, even when it feels wrong. If they scream “stop,” you must find a way to halt the vehicle, no matter how uncooperative it is. Without precision and trust, the journey will end in seconds, and the chaos will begin again from the start.

The Passenger’s Role

Being the passenger is no easier. You can see the road ahead, but you have no control over the steering, pedals, or brakes. Your only tool is your voice, and every instruction matters. A late or unclear call can send the car into a wall, down a cliff, or straight into traffic. Your route will take you through a wide variety of environments, including:

The car in Backseat Drivers might be old and unreliable, but it has one unique advantage — almost any part can be replaced with something unexpected. This creates moments where creativity becomes your best tool. If you lose the brake pedal, you can attach a cassette tape and hope it works. If a wheel is gone, you might be able to replace it with an entirely different object. These odd fixes do not always make sense, but they keep the vehicle moving, turning every repair into a strange but necessary part of the journey. You will never know when the next breakdown will happen, so being ready to improvise is part of the challenge.
