Doors: The Great Outdoors is an expansion that takes the familiar DOORS experience beyond the enclosed hotel corridors and into an open, unpredictable environment. Instead of moving from one numbered door to the next, players now find themselves navigating a stormy outdoor area known simply as The Outdoors. This new section is not accessible from the start — you’ll need to locate both the Shears and the Skeleton Key to unlock the greenhouse doors at the higher-numbered hotel rooms. Once through, the game shifts dramatically: there are no door numbers, only signs and distance markers guiding you through winding paths, dense vegetation, and atmospheric landmarks such as the mill, the clearing, and the hedge maze.
Movement through The Outdoors is a completely different experience compared to the original floors. Without the predictable corridor structure, players must rely on environmental cues and directional signs to progress. The map contains multiple open areas that connect in non-linear ways, making it possible to take wrong turns or loop back to earlier spots. Each section hides potential dangers, so progressing requires both observation and caution. In the hedge maze, for example, navigation is further complicated by aggressive entities and environmental traps that demand quick reactions.
This update introduces a variety of threats that are unique to the outdoor setting. Some will pursue you on sight, others respond to specific actions, and a few blend into the environment until it’s too late. Among them are:
Learning how each entity behaves is essential for survival, as a single mistake can send you back to the start of the section.
Avoiding grass where The Groundskeeper patrols, using cover when lightning flashes might summon Surge, and activating environmental mechanisms like guillotines to clear vines are all part of progressing. Teamwork can make a big difference, especially when one player distracts an entity while another unlocks the next path forward.
