Game description:

Plague Inc. is a strategy simulation where the player creates and evolves a pathogen with the objective of infecting the entire world. A standard game begins by choosing a disease type and selecting the country where the first infection appears. From there, the pathogen spreads between regions through local transmission, air travel, ships, animals, and other routes. There is no traditional character-driven story. Instead, each run develops through the global spread of the disease and the attempts of governments and scientists to stop it.

Choosing How the Disease Develops

The player collects DNA points as the infection spreads and spends them on new traits. These upgrades are divided into transmission, symptoms, and abilities. Transmission upgrades help the pathogen move between people or environments, symptoms change how infected people are affected, and abilities can improve resistance to heat, cold, medication, or other conditions. Choosing when to evolve each trait is important because a disease that becomes too deadly too early can kill infected people before it reaches enough countries.

The main gameplay includes:

  •         selecting a pathogen and starting country;
  •         collecting DNA points;
  •         improving transmission methods;
  •         evolving symptoms;
  •         increasing resistance to different climates and treatments;
  •         watching infection spread across the world map;
  •         reacting to cure research;
  •         adapting the disease when countries begin closing borders or changing behavior.

The World Reacts to the Outbreak

Countries do not remain passive. As the disease becomes more noticeable, governments may close airports and seaports, increase medical research, and take other measures that make further spread more difficult. Scientists also begin developing a cure. The cure progress appears as a percentage, and the player can evolve abilities that slow research or make the pathogen harder to analyze. Islands and isolated regions can be especially important because they may become difficult or impossible to reach after transport routes are closed.

Each Pathogen Changes the Strategy

Plague Inc. uses separate disease scenarios rather than traditional levels. Pathogens include bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, prions, nano-viruses, and bio-weapons, with each type changing the rules. A virus mutates symptoms more frequently, while fungus spreads internationally in a different way. Later scenarios and special diseases introduce additional mechanics and objectives.

A successful run usually requires balancing three things: spreading widely, avoiding excessive attention early, and becoming dangerous only when enough of the population is infected. If the cure reaches 100 percent, or if the disease disappears before infecting everyone, the player loses. Different difficulty settings, pathogen types, and scenarios make repeated runs require different upgrade choices and starting strategies.
