Game description:

GTA 3 Browser is a browser-based version of Grand Theft Auto III that keeps the original open-world structure and story. The player controls Claude, who is betrayed by Catalina during a bank robbery and later escapes from a prison transport. After reaching Portland, he begins taking jobs from criminals and gradually becomes involved with the Leone Mafia, the Yakuza, corrupt police officers, and other groups. The story eventually leads back to Catalina and the Colombian Cartel.

Jobs Across Liberty City

Most progress comes from completing missions for different characters. Tasks include driving people across the city, stealing cars, attacking targets, destroying vehicles, protecting allies, and escaping from police. Completing important missions moves the story forward and eventually opens additional parts of Liberty City. The main areas are Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Vale, each with its own streets, gangs, mission contacts, and safehouses.

The main gameplay includes:

  •         completing story and payphone missions;
  •         stealing and driving different vehicles;
  •         using pistols, shotguns, rifles, explosives, and other weapons;
  •         escaping police and reducing wanted levels;
  •         exploring Liberty City between missions;
  •         completing taxi, ambulance, police, and firefighter activities;
  •         finding hidden packages and other optional challenges;
  •         saving progress at safehouses.

Three Districts Instead of Separate Levels

GTA 3 Browser does not use traditional numbered levels. The city is divided into large districts that become accessible through story progression. Missions are placed throughout these areas, but the player can also ignore the current objective and explore freely. Roads, bridges, tunnels, docks, buildings, and shortcuts make navigation an important part of both missions and normal exploration.

Driving, Shooting, and Staying Out of Trouble

The player moves Claude on foot and enters vehicles found throughout the city. Combat includes firearms, melee attacks, and explosives, while driving is used for transportation, chases, escapes, and many mission objectives. Committing crimes raises the wanted level, causing stronger police forces to pursue Claude until he escapes or reduces it. Browser ports typically keep keyboard and mouse controls and may also support controllers.

The basic structure remains open-ended throughout the game. Claude can follow the main story, complete optional missions, search for collectibles, or simply travel around the city. Browser implementations can differ technically, but current ports based on reverse-engineered GTA III code aim to preserve the original missions, map, vehicles, combat, and free exploration inside a web browser.
